During the last months and years all of us experienced several changes in the weather induced by climate change. Those changing weather phenomena are also impacting aviation in different ways through changing winds, larger and higher thunderstorms, winters without snow and more extreme events.
The difficulty is that while most of these phenomena occur locally, others such as the jet stream affect aviation globally. In addition, some phenomena are very negative for aviation due to their impact in terms of fuel burn and service quality, while others are positive – and others are neutral.
This situation leads to changes and high uncertainty, reinforced by the fact that neither science nor leading institutions have a sound knowledge or metrics to measure climate change and its impact of aviation. Hence, FABEC has launched several activities to foster research on this topic and to share the already existing knowledge as broadly as possible.
